What is noise analysis?

Noise analysis is primarily used to show compliance with product specifications or with environmental regulations, such as OSHA and zoning ordinances. Noise analysis can be further used as a troubleshooting tool to identify noise sources, transmission paths, and radiating surfaces.

The most commonly used tool for noise analysis is a sound level meter. This instrument measures an overall decibel level of the noise, and is used to perform octave and one third-octave band analyses. Output from the sound level meter can be further input to a spectrum analyzer for identification of discrete frequency components making up the noise.

Acoustic intensity testing is by far the premier noise analysis tool. Rather than using a single microphone to merely measure pressure, acoustic intensity uses two microphones to measure sound vectors. Calibration of the vector approach allows for rapid determination of overall radiated sound power levels. Acoustic intensity is also an excellent troubleshooting tool for positive identification of individual noise sources.

Noise analysis is the basis of developing the most cost effective corrective action; that is, reduce noise at the source, cut the transmission path, and/or treat the radiating surface.
